Rolf and Marieke Penterman are first-generation Wisconsin dairy farmers who moved from The Netherlands to Wisconsin in 2002. Having both grown up on small, dairy farms in Holland, Rolf and Marieke wanted to pursue their passion for dairy farming in an area that would afford them the capabilities of expansion. Wisconsin, with its vast diary base and farm-friendly people, seemed ideal. Marieke discovered that she missed he beloved Dutch Gouda cheese and so began her adventure of making award winning Gouda cheese!

Her first batch of cheese was made on November 22, 2006. Soon after, she took a wheel of her Foenegreek cheese with her to the U.S. Championships in Madison, and took first place in the 2007 National Cheese Championships on her very first attempt. She has never looked back. Since that first win in 2007, she has won multiple awards each year at the American Cheese Society, U.S. Championships, and, beginning in 2008, the World Cheese Championships and many more. In 2013, she was named the U.S. Cheese Grand Champion. In 2014, Marieke swept the Plain Gouda Class, and in 2015, she took down the competition again. In 2016, she swept the Flavored Gouda Class at the World Cheese Championships. Her reputation grows and the awards continue to pour in, year after year.

Meet the Cheesemaker

Marieke Gouda's Cheesemaker

Born and raised on her family's 60-cow dairy farm in the Netherlands, Marieke was destined for a life in the dairy business. She earned her bachelor's degree in the dairy business and worked as a farm inspector right after college. The Netherlands is a very small country, so farm land is scarce and incredibly expensive, so Marieke's husband started a 350-cow dairy farm in Thorp, Wisconsin. Before Rolf left for the U.S., Marieke asked to come and help out for a week. Rolf being an intelligent man, agreed. Before the week was over, Rolf and Marieke were making big plans together, and in 2003, they were married. Nothing pleases Marieke more than to see her cheeses enjoyed by loyal customers and newfound followers, watching their eyes roll skyward in loving appreciation as they savor old favorites and new creations. Rolf and Marieke have not only grown a prosperous business but also a fine family that now includes five children.

Belegen Gouda

Belegen Gouda is created by expert licensed cheesemaker Marieke Penterman and her team, who handcraft traditional Dutch Goudas based on authentic cheesemaking methods of Marieke's homeland, the Netherlands. She transforms farmstead-fresh, raw cows' milk from her family farm into award-winning cheese which is then carefully cured on pine plank sin a temperature and humidity-controlled aging room. Their Belegen Gouda is smooth and mellow with hints of toasted nuts. Pair with cornichons and prosciutto and bock beer or pinot grigio. Delicious on egg sandwiches, or shred and toss with pastas.

Foenegreek Gouda

Marieke® Gouda Foenegreek was created by award-winning cheesemaker Marieke Penterman and celebrates her Dutch heritage. She and her team handcraft each wheel using herbs and seeds mostly gathered in the Netherlands. Premium raw cow's milk from her family farm provides each wheel with exceptional flavor and texture. Foenegreek is sweet and nutty with flavor notes reminiscent of maple syrup.  Pair with toasted almonds and maple syrup as well as dark rum or amber beer. Foenegreek is a standout on a cheese board and delicious in a grown-up grilled cheese sandwich.
